Generation AI Symposium

Our Generation AI: The Future of Technology & Young People Symposium brought together world-class scholars, policymakers, funders, and entrepreneurs to find solutions to a series of challenges and to help ensure that AI contributes to a flourishing future for young people. At this event we:

  • Showcased 'Big Ideas' for practical action from leading academics and policymakers

  • Highlighted exciting start-up companies working at the intersection of AI and young people

  • Launched a new Technology & Ethics Design Programme

  • Heard from experts about innovative financing pathways

Speakers included: Baroness Kidron OBE, Sir Anthony Seldon, Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, Professor Lord Tarassenko, Dr Andrew Serazin, and Dr Amy Orben. We also heard from a group of young people, who participated in discussions and shared their experiences and perspectives on AI. See here for a full list of speakers.


Agenda

  • Welcome address from Professor Lord Tarassenko (Reuben College President) and Dr Andrew Serazin (Global Challenges Programme Director)

  • Secondary school students from the Global Social Leaders Programme will share insights from their experiences using AI.

  • Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore is the Leader of the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Group at the University of Cambridge. Her group's research focuses on the development of social cognition and decision making in the human adolescent brain, and adolescent mental health. 

    In this keynote address, Professor Blakemore will explore adolescent development, neuroscience, and the role of technology.

  • Sir Anthony Seldon is a contemporary Historian and pioneer educator. He is the former VC of Buckingham University and Head of Wellington College.

    In his keynote address, Sir Anthony will explore what young people can achieve through AI, with a particular focus on educational institutions.

  • Baroness Beeban Kidron is a leading voice on children’s rights in the digital environment and a global authority on digital regulation and accountability. Baroness Kidron sits as a crossbench peer in the UK’s House of Lords. She is an advisor to the Institute for Ethics in AI, University of Oxford, a Commissioner on the UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, an expert advisor for the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, and Founder and Chair of 5Rights Foundation. She is a Visiting Professor of Practice at the LSE, and a Fellow in the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford.

    In her keynote address, Baroness Kidron will draw upon her work with the 5Rights Foundation and the House of Lords, sharing insights on emerging legislative efforts to ensure digital rights for children.
